Description
Rock Squirrel h1843 Photography by Mark Myhaver
This Rock Squirrel (Spermophilus variegatus) is the largest squirrel I have ever seen. The rock squirrel looks like a typical tree squirrel, but is a ground dweller. It is the largest of the ground squirrels.
In New England, I saw many squirrels on any given day as they are plentiful there. I've often commented to people that rabbits are much more plentiful here in southern Arizona. They take the place of squirrels here, in that they are everywhere. This particular squirrel is the size of a mis-size rabbit.
